What the questions look like
Most of these questions are only a sentence or two long. The last line might say:
- “At this rate, how many minutes will it take Dana to pack 130 boxes?”
- “How many feet are equivalent to 222 inches? (1 foot = 12 inches)”
- “What is the density, in grams per cubic centimeter, of the object?”
- “How must the amount of blue paint change to maintain this ratio?”
- “Which of the following is closest to this rate in cubic feet per minute?”
Look for “per,” “at this rate,” “equivalent to” and “proportional to,” and for a conversion fact in parentheses at the end.
Before you calculate anything, write down the unit the answer needs. Say Dana packs 20 boxes in 4 minutes. “How many minutes to pack 130 boxes?” wants 26. “How many boxes per minute?” wants 5.
Desmos works as a calculator here, but it can't tell you which way a conversion goes. On a one-step problem you'll finish faster by hand.
Rates and “per”
A The amount for one unit, like 12 dollars an hour. is the amount for one of something, like dollars per pound or boxes per minute.
An area of 56 square miles has an estimated 1,904 foxes. What is the population density, in foxes per square mile?
“A per B” means A divided by B, in that order.
- Right
- foxes per square mile
- Wrong
- foxes per square mile
That division gives square miles per fox. The unit asked for names foxes first, so foxes go on top.
For a rate given per dozen or per case, find the amount for one first. Every step after that is a single multiplication or division.
Sometimes two counts change at once. A moving company charged $2,100 for a job where 5 movers each worked 6 hours. At the same rate, what does a job with 3 movers working 4 hours each cost?
Count mover-hours.
Dollars per mover-hour.
Mover-hours in the new job.
The new job costs $840.
Trap: Only one count scaled
$1,260 is . It cuts the movers from 5 to 3 but leaves everyone working 6 hours. $1,400 changes the hours and keeps all 5 movers.
What to do: Multiply the counts into one unit, like mover-hours, and find the price of one of those.
Harder questions mix totals with daily averages. Store A sold 4 times as many shirts as Store B in total. Store A averaged 50 shirts a day and Store B averaged 20. Store A's sale lasted how many times as long as Store B's?
You don't know either total, so call Store B's total . The number of days is the total divided by the daily rate.
Write each store's total.
Divide each total by its daily rate to get days.
Divide A's days by B's. Dividing by a fraction means multiplying by it flipped.
is on the top and the bottom, so it cancels.
Store A's sale lasted 1.6 times as long.
Proportions
Dana packs 20 boxes in 4 minutes. At this rate, how many minutes will it take her to pack 130 boxes?
The unit rate is usually the fastest way in.
Boxes per minute.
Boxes divided by boxes per minute leaves minutes.
You can also set up a Two ratios set equal to each other, which you can solve for a missing number., which is two ratios set equal. Then cross-multiply, which means multiplying each top by the other side's bottom.
Put the same kind of amount in the same spot on both sides before you cross-multiply.
- Right
- , so and .
- Wrong
- , so and .
The wrong one has boxes over minutes on the left and minutes over boxes on the right. 650 minutes for 130 boxes is far slower than 5 boxes a minute.
To check in Desmos, type 20/4, press the right arrow, then type =130/x. Desmos draws a vertical line at . Without the arrow, the = lands in the bottom of the first fraction and nothing graphs.
A question with no story works the same way. “The ratio to is equivalent to the ratio 5 to 8. What is the value of when ?” Write and cross-multiply to get , so .
“ is proportional to ” means for one fixed number . If when , what is when ?
Put in the pair you know.
Divide both sides by 4.
Use the same for the new .
Trap: Adding where you should multiply
24 comes from noticing that 18 is 14 more than 4 and adding 14 to 10. But , and has to be 4.5 times every time.
What to do: Find by dividing by . A proportional relationship gives when , and adding a number never does.
Density
Density is mass per volume, so it's mass divided by volume. An object has a mass of 234 grams and takes up 18 cubic centimeters. Its density is grams per cubic centimeter.
Harder ones give you the density and only a length. A type of wood has a density of 650 kilograms per cubic meter. A cube of it has edges 0.70 meter long. To the nearest whole number, what is its mass in kilograms?
A cube's volume is edge times edge times edge. This is in cubic meters.
Mass is density times volume. Cubic meters cancel and kilograms are left.
Round to the nearest kilogram.
Trap: Density upside down, or the edge used as the volume
For the 234-gram object, 0.077 is , volume over mass. For the cube, 455 is , which multiplies by the edge as if it were the volume.
What to do: Read “grams per cubic centimeter” as grams divided by cubic centimeters. If you're given only a length, find the volume before you use the density.
Some questions give the mass and ask for the edge. Divide the mass by the density to get the volume, , then take the cube root. In Desmos, type nthroot, then 3, press the right arrow, and type 0.343. It shows 0.7.
Parts and the whole
A bag of 70 marbles has red and blue marbles in a ratio of 3 to 7. How many are red?
The ratio splits the bag into 10 equal parts.
Each part holds 7 marbles.
Red gets 3 parts, so 21 red.
Blue gets 7 parts, so 49 blue.
In a ratio of to , the first amount is of the whole.
- Right
- Red is of the bag, and .
- Wrong
- Red is of the bag, and .
compares red with blue. The whole bag has parts.
It works backward too. If red is of the bag, blue is the other , so red to blue is 3 to 7.
Trap: The ratio turned around
A question about this bag asks for the ratio of blue to red. 3 to 7 is a choice, but it's red to blue. The question named blue first, so the answer is 7 to 3.
What to do: On your scratch paper, write a word beside each number, like “red 3, blue 7,” and check which one the question names first.
Keep a ratio when one amount changes
A paint mix uses 28 ounces of blue for every 16 ounces of white. The painter adds 6 more ounces of white. How must the amount of blue change to maintain this ratio?
The new amount of white.
The multiplier, or how many times bigger the white got.
Multiply the blue by the same number.
Subtract to find the change.
The blue must increase by 10.5 ounces.
To keep a ratio, multiply both amounts by the same number.
- Right
- Multiply both amounts by 1.375, so 28 to 16 becomes 38.5 to 22.
- Wrong
- Add 6 to both amounts, so 28 to 16 becomes 34 to 22.
28 to 16 and 38.5 to 22 both reduce to 7 to 4. 34 to 22 reduces to 17 to 11, which is a different ratio.
Trap: The new amount given as the change
“It must increase by 38.5 ounces” gives the new amount as if it were the change. “It must decrease by 10.5 ounces” has the right number going the wrong way.
What to do: Reread whether the question wants the new amount or the change, and whether it goes up or down.
At Yilmaz Theatre, lower and upper seats cost and dollars, respectively. The price ratio remains constant when lower seats cost dollars.
What is the new upper-seat price, in dollars?
Show the answer
Accepted answers: 21.25, 85/4
Solution
The lower-seat price is multiplied by , so the upper-seat price must be multiplied by the same factor to keep the A comparison of two amounts, like 3 to 5.Read the lesson A number that doesn’t change, like the 7 in 5x + 7, or a letter such as p that stands for one fixed value.Read the lesson. Thus, the new upper-seat price is dollars.
A result of comes from inverting the rate and calculating . A result of comes from prematurely rounding to before multiplying by .
Note that and are examples of ways to enter a correct answer.
Converting units
A conversion fact gives you a fraction worth 1, since its top and bottom are the same amount. Put the unit you're getting rid of on the bottom so it cancels.
How many feet are equivalent to 222 inches? (1 foot = 12 inches)
Inches go on the bottom, so they cancel and feet are left.
Divide.
Trap: The fact used backward
2,664 is . It uses the right numbers, but a foot is longer than an inch, so the number of feet has to be smaller than 222.
What to do: Put the unit you're getting rid of on the bottom. Then ask whether the new unit is bigger or smaller. A bigger unit means a smaller number.
Sometimes the fact comes in an odd form, like (2 meters = 200 centimeters). Cut it down to 1 meter = 100 centimeters before you use it.
Two conversions in a row
A soccer field is 110 yards long. How many inches long is it? (1 yard = 3 feet and 1 foot = 12 inches)
Yards cancel, and feet are left.
Feet cancel, and inches are left.
Trap: Stopped one step early
330 is the length in feet. It shows up in your own work halfway through, so it looks finished, but the question asked for inches.
What to do: Cross off each fact in the parentheses as you use it. If one is left, you aren't done.
Zeno, a plumber, joins several copper pipes whose combined length is 189 feet.
Approximately how many meters is this length? ( yard feet and yard meter)
- A
- B
- C
- D
Show the answer
- ACorrect answer
Convert feet to yards: yards. Then use the given approximation to convert yards to meters: , so the length is approximately meters.
- B
This converts feet to yards but stops before converting yards to meters.
- C
This divides yards by , reversing the conversion rate. Since each yard is approximately meter, multiply by .
- D
This swaps the roles of the two conversion factors, dividing by and then multiplying by . The feet-to-yards conversion uses division by , followed by multiplication by .
Solution
First convert feet to yards. Since yard equals feet, yards. Then convert yards to meters. Since yard is approximately meter, , so the length is approximately meters.
Square and cubic units
An area has two lengths in it, so the conversion has to happen twice. With 1 meter = 100 centimeters:
A square meter is 100 centimeters on each side.
So square the factor.
A cube has three lengths, so cube it.
How many square meters is 45,000 square centimeters?
For square units, square the factor. For cubic units, cube it.
- Right
- square meters
- Wrong
- square meters
Dividing by 100 once converts only one of the two lengths.
If the unit says square or cubic, write the The small raised number that says how many times to multiply, like the 3 in x cubed.Read the lesson on the factor before you calculate. In Desmos, type 45000/100^2 so you can't type the wrong number of zeros.
Scale drawings
On a floor plan, 1 inch represents 8 feet. A wall that's 4.5 inches long on the plan is feet long. To go from real feet back to the plan, divide by 8.
A room on the plan is 2 inches by 3 inches. How many square feet is the real room?
Turn each plan length into feet.
Multiply the real lengths to get 384 square feet.
Or start from the room's area on the plan, square inches.
To scale an area, multiply by the scale squared.
- Right
- square feet
- Wrong
- square feet
Both of the room's lengths grew 8 times, so the area grew times.
Use one way or the other. Once you've turned both lengths into feet, their product is already in square feet, and multiplying by 64 again would make it 64 times too big.
Rates with two units
Miles per hour has a distance unit and a time unit. Convert them one at a time, and write the units on every line.
60 miles per hour is how many feet per second? (1 mile = 5,280 feet and 1 hour = 3,600 seconds)
Miles cancel.
Hours cancel. .
Trap: The time unit left alone
316,800 is still feet per hour. And 1,140,480,000 comes from multiplying by 3,600 when you needed to divide.
What to do: Convert the time last, then say the answer with both units in it. A second is much shorter than an hour, so the amount per second has to be smaller.
The hardest ones change a square or cubic unit and a time unit at once, and give you only a length fact. A tank fills at 4 cubic meters per hour. What is that rate in cubic feet per minute, to the nearest hundredth? (Use 1 meter = 3.28 feet.)
The unit is cubic, so cube the length fact.
Cubic meters cancel, leaving cubic feet per hour.
Divide by 60 to go from per hour to per minute.
Round once, at the end.
Trap: Rounded too soon
2.33 comes from rounding to 35 first, since .
What to do: Keep the whole chain on one calculator line and round once, at the end.
The whole chain on one line
- Type
4/60, press the right arrow, then type*3.28^3. Without the arrow, the rest would land in the bottom of the fraction. - Read the result, 2.3525..., and round it to 2.35.
A laminating machine seals plastic film over documents at a constant rate of square centimeters per second.
What is this rate in square inches per minute, rounded to the nearest hundredth? (Use .)
- A
- B
- C
- D
Show the answer
- A
This converts the area units but not the time unit: is the rate in square inches per second. A minute has seconds, so the rate per minute is times as large.
- BCorrect answer
Since square inch equals square centimeters, divide by to convert the area units. Then multiply by , because a minute has seconds: , which rounds to .
- C
This rounds the squared conversion factor from to before dividing: . Rounding the factor early changes the hundredths digit; keep the full factor and round only the final rate.
- D
This divides by instead of : . A square inch is centimeters on each side, so dividing by once converts only one of its two lengths.
Solution
Square the given length conversion to get the area conversion: .
Divide by to convert square centimeters to square inches, and multiply by because a minute contains seconds. Keeping the full conversion factor gives square inches per minute.
Rounded to the nearest hundredth, the rate is square inches per minute.
Entering the answer
On a A question where you type your own answer instead of picking one of four.Read the lesson, an answer that doesn't come out even can go in as a fraction. If you get , type 20/3. As a decimal it has to fill all five characters, so 6.666 or 6.667. A shorter 6.67 is marked wrong. If Desmos shows a decimal, the small round fraction button on the result row switches it to a fraction.
Leave commas out of big numbers, so the soccer field's 3,960 inches goes in as 3960. The grid-in lesson covers what fits in the box.
Practice
Write down the unit each question asks for, and check your answer against it at the end.
