What the questions look like
The equation has one unknown letter, the A letter that stands for a number you don’t know yet, like the x in 5x + 7.. It's never squared, it's never in the bottom of a fraction, and there's no second unknown.
Read the last line first. It might say:
- “What value of is the solution to the given equation?”
- “If , what is the value of ?”
- “Which equation has the same solution as the given equation?”
- “Which equation represents this situation?”
- “How many solutions does the given equation have?” The choices are Zero, Exactly one, Exactly two and Infinitely many.
In the second one, isn't the answer. The question wants the whole expression .
Some questions add a second letter and call it a A number that doesn’t change, like the 7 in 5x + 7, or a letter such as p that stands for one fixed value.. A constant is a number that stays fixed. It can be a plain number, like the 7 in , or a letter like that stands for one number you haven't been told. The last line might read “In the given equation, is a constant. The equation has no solution. What is the value of ?” Then the answer is , and you never need to find .
Solving for the letter
Here's one with every move written out: .
Start.
Multiply both terms in the parentheses by 3.
Subtract from both sides.
Add 6 to both sides.
Divide both sides by 11.
Check: put 2 into the original. Both sides come out to 24.
In the third row, and are Parts of an expression with the same letter raised to the same power, like 5x and 2x, which you can add together.. Both are a number times , so they combine into . Every row does the same thing to both sides, which keeps the two sides equal. Undo the adding and subtracting first, then the multiplying.
Most slips happen in the fourth and fifth rows.
To undo a subtraction, add the same number to both sides.
- Right
- becomes .
- Wrong
- becomes .
Adding 6 to both sides undoes the , and .
Trap: A sign that didn't change
is a choice. It comes from , where the 6 crossed the equals sign and kept its minus sign.
What to do: Put your answer back into the original equation. With , both sides come out to 24. With , they don't match.
The number multiplying the letter is its The number multiplying a letter, like the 5 in 5x.. Divide both sides by it.
- Right
- gives .
- Wrong
- gives .
means 11 times , so you undo it by dividing by 11. Subtracting 11 would undo an addition that isn't there.
Desmos can check any of these. Type 3(5x-2)=4x+16 on its own line, and Desmos draws a vertical line at the solution. Click where it crosses the horizontal One of the two lines a graph is measured against, one running across and one running up. to read . Typing takes about ten seconds. If the algebra comes easily to you, use Desmos as a check. If signs and fractions are where you lose points, the ten seconds are worth it every time.
Clearing parentheses and fractions
Multiply every term inside the parentheses.
- Right
- Wrong
The 3 multiplies the and the .
Trap: Only one term got multiplied
For , 22 is a choice. It comes from , which multiplied the by 3 and left the alone.
What to do: Draw an arrow from the 3 to each term inside the parentheses, and check that every term has one.
To clear fractions, multiply every term on both sides by a number all the bottoms go into.
Start. 5 and 4 both go into 20.
Multiply every term on both sides by 20.
4 copies of minus 5 copies leaves minus one copy.
Multiply both sides by .
Subtract 2 from both sides.
Keep in one piece the whole way. Multiplying it out twice takes longer and gives you more places to slip.
When you clear fractions, multiply both sides.
- Right
- Times 20:
- Wrong
- Times 20:
The right side gets multiplied by 20 too. Leaving the alone leads to .
Decimals work the same way with 10 or 100. With money, multiply by 100 to work in cents.
Start.
Multiply every term by 100.
Subtract 240 from both sides.
Divide both sides by 15.
Typing the fraction equation
- Type
1/5and press the right arrow. Without the arrow, everything you type next stays in the bottom of the fraction. - Type
(x+2)-1/4and press the right arrow again. - Type
(x+2)=-3. - The vertical line sits at , off the starting screen, so zoom out until you see it.
When the answer isn't the letter
Some questions don't want the letter at all. Each kind below has a quicker route than solving.
Which equation has the same solution as the given equation?
- A.
- B.
- C.
- D.
Subtract 9 from both sides and you're done. B is correct. C adds 9 instead of subtracting it, and D drops the 13 from one side only.
Trap: The answer beside the wrong expression
looks right if you solved all the way to first. But it says is .
What to do: Keep each value with its own expression. Here 468 is the value of , and 36 is the value of .
When the question asks for an expression, compare it with the side you're given. If , what is the value of ?
Start. is , and 12 is .
Multiply both sides by 2.
Multiply each term by 2.
Multiply both sides, and every term on each side.
- Right
- If , then .
- Wrong
- If , then .
86 is . It doubles the and keeps the old 6.
The multiplier can be bigger. If , then is 10 times the left side, so it's . You never have to find .
A group that shows up twice can be solved as one piece. If , what is the value of ?
Start. Treat as one thing.
Subtract from both sides. 9 copies minus 5 copies is 4 copies.
Divide both sides by 4.
Trap: One step too far
9 is a choice. It's the value of , one step past the value the question asked for.
What to do: Reread the last line before you pick. It asks for , so stop at 7. Add 2 only if it asks for .
Here's one to try.
Pilar records that a coffee shop serves cups per day. Over 12 days, the shop serves 16 additional catering cups, for 652 cups total.
What is the value of ?
- A
- B
- C
- D
Show the answer
- A
This stops after finding the daily value, . The question asks for , so one more calculation is required.
- BCorrect answer
The situation gives . Subtracting 16 and dividing by 12 gives , so .
- C
This results from adding 16 when isolating , giving . The 16 catering cups are already included in 652, so they must be subtracted.
- D
This results from multiplying by while leaving the A number that doesn’t change, like the 7 in 5x + 7, or a letter such as p that stands for one fixed value.Read the lesson 16 unchanged, producing . Multiplication must be applied to every term.
Solution
Translate the situation into an Two expressions set equal to each other, like 5x + 7 = 22.Read the lesson. The shop serves regular cups over 12 days and 16 additional catering cups, so
Subtract 16 from both sides:
Divide both sides by 12:

Writing the equation from a story
Name the unknown in words first, with its unit: “ is the number of months.” Then find the amount that comes once and the amount per unit.
A gym charges a $45 enrollment fee plus $22 a month. Kai has paid $243 in all.
The rate multiplies the count. The one-time amount gets added once.
- Right
- Wrong
The wrong equation charges the $45 fee every month. Kai pays it once, so it stands alone.
Subtract 45 from both sides to get , then divide by 22. Kai has been a member for 9 months.
A cost comes off once too. A newsletter earns $5 per subscriber and pays $2,400 in fixed costs. For a profit of $8,000, the equation is , so subscribers. If you leave out the cost, you get and 1,600 subscribers. That equation counts every dollar coming in as profit.
When one amount is a multiple of another, name the smaller one first. A batch of fruit punch is 2,450 milliliters of syrup, juice and soda water. It has 6 times as much juice as syrup, and 350 milliliters of soda water.
| Ingredient | Milliliters |
|---|---|
| Syrup | |
| Juice | |
| Soda water |
Add the three amounts.
. The syrup counts too.
Subtract 350 from both sides.
Divide both sides by 7.
The punch has 300 milliliters of syrup.
Trap: The multiple turned around
makes the syrup 6 times the juice. And multiplies the soda water by 6 too.
What to do: Read the sentence again with your expressions in it. Juice is , which is 6 times the syrup.
When the rate starts later
A crew charges $950 for the first 3 hours of a job and $50 for each hour after that. A job of hours costs $1,200.
Take the included hours off the count before the rate multiplies it.
- Right
- Wrong
The $950 already pays for 3 hours. Only the hours after those, of them, cost $50 each.
Test it at . The extra charge should be zero, and .
Trap: The block in the wrong place
charges for 3 hours that never happened. takes off 3 dollars, when it should take off 3 hours.
What to do: Put in the size of the block, here . The left side should come out to just the first charge, $950.
A total is formed from a fixed amount of 627 and a variable amount. The variable amount is 53 times the number by which exceeds 50, and the total equals 786.
Which equation represents this situation?
- A
- B
- C
- D
Show the answer
- A
This applies the rate of 53 to the full value of . The rate should apply only to the amount by which exceeds 50, which is .
- B
This adds 50 to instead of subtracting it. The phrase “the number by which exceeds 50” translates to .
- C
This places the subtraction of 50 outside the multiplication, so 53 multiplies only . The entire difference must be multiplied by 53.
- DCorrect answer
The amount by which exceeds 50 is , so the A letter that stands for a number you don’t know yet, like the x in 5x + 7.Read the lesson amount is . Adding this to the fixed amount of 627 and setting the total equal to 786 gives .
Solution
Translate each part of the situation. The fixed amount is . The number by which exceeds 50 is , so the A letter that stands for a number you don’t know yet, like the x in 5x + 7.Read the lesson amount is .
Add the fixed and variable amounts, then set their sum equal to the total: .
What a number in the equation means
A theater has 14 seats in its front row and 18 in each row behind it, 302 seats in all. That's , where is the number of rows behind the front row.
The number multiplying the letter is the rate, the amount per unit. The number on its own is the starting value, the amount that comes once.
- Right
- 18 is the number of seats in each row behind the front row.
- Wrong
- 18 is the number of seats in all the rows behind the front row together.
All those rows together hold seats, which is 288 here. 18 is the number for one row.
You don't need to solve to answer this. Decide whether the number multiplies the letter or stands alone, and you know what it means.
How many solutions
Simplify both sides all the way. Then compare the terms, and after that the numbers on their own.
| Simplified equation | What matches? | Solutions |
|---|---|---|
| Different terms | Exactly one | |
| Same terms, different numbers | None | |
| Both match | Infinitely many |
If you subtract and the terms cancel, read what's left. is never true, so no works. is always true, so every works.
A linear equation can't have exactly two solutions.
Multiply out any parentheses before you compare.
- Right
- has infinitely many solutions.
- Wrong
- has no solution.
Multiply out the left side and you get on both sides. Every works.
Trap: None and all swapped
For , “Infinitely many solutions” is a choice. The terms match, but 10 and 3 don't, so there are no solutions.
What to do: Once the terms match, compare the numbers on their own too. If they're equal, every works. If they're different, none does.
Find the constant
Here the question gives you the number of solutions and asks for the constant.
In the given equation, is a constant. The equation has no solution. What is the value of ?
Multiply out the left side.
No solution needs matching terms, so set the numbers multiplying equal.
Subtract 2 from both sides.
Divide both sides by 7.
Check: the terms match and isn't 9, so no works.
Trap: Matching before you multiply out
A result of comes from on the left, which multiplied only the by 4. That sets instead of .
What to do: Multiply out every term first. Then label each part of the simplified equation: the number multiplying on each side, and the number on its own on each side. For no solution, set the parts equal.
For infinitely many solutions, the numbers on their own have to match too. Here and 9 never match, so no value of gives infinitely many.
When the terms are all on one side, collect them first. In this one, is a constant and the equation has no solution.
Pull out the : is .
The right side has no , so its part is 0. For no solution, the left part must be 0 too.
Add to both sides, then divide by 18. .
Check: the equation becomes , which is never true.
Answers like and are normal here, so don't change your work because the answer isn't a whole number. On a A question where you type your own answer instead of picking one of four.Read the lesson, type the fraction, such as 10/7. You get five characters for a positive answer and six for a negative one, counting the minus sign. A decimal cut off too short can be marked wrong.
The last version asks what the constant can't be.
In the given equation, is a positive integer. If the equation has exactly one solution, which of the following CANNOT be the value of ?
- A. 2
- B. 5
- C. 7
- D. 10
Exactly one solution needs different terms. So the one value that fails is the one that makes them match.
Multiply both terms in the parentheses by 2.
The terms match when the numbers multiplying are equal.
Divide both sides by 2. B is correct.
With , the equation is , which has no solution. Choice D comes from matching with 10 before multiplying out the 2.
Do these by hand. A Desmos slider for the constant can show you roughly where the answer is, but it won't give you an exact value like .
In the given equation, is a constant. The equation has no solution. What is the value of ?
Show the answer
Accepted answers: 2/5, .4, 0.4
Solution
Distribute to get , then rearrange: . For there to be no solution, the The number multiplying a letter, like the 5 in 5x.Read the lesson of must be zero and the right side must be nonzero.
Solve : , so or . When , the original Two expressions set equal to each other, like 5x + 7 = 22.Read the lesson becomes . Subtracting gives , so there is no solution. When , both sides are , so every value of is a solution.
The wrong answer confuses identical sides, which give infinitely many solutions, with no solution. Getting the same value as by solving matches the A number that doesn’t change, like the 7 in 5x + 7, or a letter such as p that stands for one fixed value.Read the lesson terms instead of first matching the coefficients of . The wrong answer comes from distributing only to the first term and writing ; multiplying by the outer gives .
